Interested to try your first cigar? Or maybe you’ve already tried a few cigars, but you still consider yourself a beginner. Either way, we’re here to help introduce you to the amazing world of cigars.

What is a Cigar?

A cigar is made of dried and fermented tobacco leaves. The leaves are carefully rolled into a bundle. The final cigar is made of three parts: wrapper, binder, and filler. The top of the cigar is called a “head” and the bottom is a “foot”. The head is finished with a cap.

How to Choose a Cigar

Cigars range in strength from mild to strong. “Strength and body refer to the cigar’s inherent intensity. Once could smoke a cigar that is full of flavor, yet not particularly strong or full bodied, meaning there’s still plenty of finessed flavor that won’t impact the palate too heavily.” – Cigar Aficionado, Ten Things Every Cigar Smoker Should Know.

How to Cut & Light a Cigar

Before you light your cigar, you must first cut it. Cut the head of the cigar. Cut beneath the head where the cigar tapers subtly. This is called the shoulder. It is recommended to cut above or at the shoulder, but not below. Cutting your cigar too much will cause it to unravel.

When it’s time to light a cigar, use matches if possible. A cigar should be lit the way a marshmallow is toasted – slowly and steadily with minimal contact between the flame and cigar.

How to Smoke a Cigar

Smoking a cigar is about enjoyment and savoring the moment. “No single part of the process of enjoying a cigar should be rushed,” advises George Frakes, James J Fox’s Master of Habanos, in How to Smoke a Cigar the Right Way from Gentleman’s Journal. Cigars are rolled to be smoked at a relaxed pace. For the best smoke, take a puff about every minute or so.

Leave the ash on the end of your cigar for as long as possible. This enhances the flavor of your cigar and keeps it cool, so that it burns at the right pace.
