Chaloner & Co. was first opened in 1874 as a newsstand in downtown Adrian, Michigan. For over 100 years, the Chaloner family ran the iconic newsstand and sold candies, magazines, cigars, and popcorn. The store became a well-known feature in the community.
Unfortunately, the building was closed in September 2015, and a “for sale” sign was placed in the window.
Chaloner & Co. Reopens
In 2017, two Adrian residents purchased the building in the hopes of bringing it back to life.
“There are so many people in Adrian that are really, really passionate about Chaloner’s and its past, so we want to keep that history while also creating new memories for people in the community,” one of the new owners was quoted as saying in The Daily Telegram.
Chaloner & Co. was carefully renovated from 2017 through 2018. In January of 2019, Chaloner & Co. was reopened at its original location.
The interior of Chaloner’s has changed very little throughout the years. Many of the old pipes, tobacco tins, and cigars that were once displayed in the front window, along with the numerous historic pictures and signs, still adorn the establishment today.

Cigar House
The renovation of Chaloner & Co. included a delightful surprise: an upscale cigar lounge on the second and third floors of the building which featured a full bar and handpicked selection of fine cigars.
The ornate cigar house is an extension of Chaloner & Co. The owners are enthusiastic about its creation. “Our passion is to revive the downtown area and provide an unique, innovative experience to the community and cigar aficionados everywhere.”
